Evaluation 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product?

Mise en scene and camera work: Looking back at my preliminary work i believe i have had a great improvements of what i have produced. In terms of camera shot, and mise en scene in my photos which has made my photos turn out in a professional style, and to create a professional magazine product. There has also been improvements in my images, during my preliminary i did not model my artist, an example is that the front cover for my preliminary i just had the model wear what he was wearing at the time with no specific instructions, adding to this, as it was just a standard school magazine i should of had the model in school uniform as that would represent a school better despite him being in 6th form.

However for my final cover of my final product i have my model styled in an Indie/Bright outfit, and with cut off jeans, and customized old skool vans, my model depicted the perfect indie style, adding to this the brand 'palace' that my model is wearing is a well known indie brand and all of my customers would be familiar to the brand itself. This style was not too extravagant so that people think that the magazine will not feature what they like, but individual enough to give off interesting look. Adding to this the unusual look will allow my customers to be able to associate with the magazine as that is what they are known for, this equals more customers for the magazine and a larger fan base. This change to the specific modelling of my artist signals improvements i have made while taking the images compared to my preliminary, in the aspect of mise en scene.

My camera work skills have also improved when taking the images for my magazine, this is shown in many ways, the first way is that all of my images are clearer, this makes the image look more pristine and the magazine more professional, also i used lash for a lot of my photos as it makes the image clearer, compare to my preliminary where i just used my standard iPhone 7+ camera with no flash. Another way my camera work has improved is that i have been able to position my camera differently t capture different angles of the model, an allow for more different shots, we see this on my front cover where this shot is taken from a low point, this allows the model to look directly into the lens and really address the audience. We also see that my directing skills gave improved as my artist on the double page spread has 2 different outfits on, adding to this, the photo which features a derelict building in the background, i ha to find a location and use my camera skills. This outlines two improvements which i have personally made while producing my final product since my preliminary product.

Adding to this my overall knowledge of the importance of the magazine photos to be perfect has improved, you can see that i have used a wide range of poses and models, and that each image has to have the right lighting and portray the right image, you can see during my photo shoot blog posts that i have used different rages of shots, this outlines the improvements i have made since my preliminary work when i did not appreciate the importance of photography to a magazine.

Text arrangement and editing: From my preliminary work to my final product i have learnt a lot about where text should go, how many capitals, size of text, how to space it out, and which products appear more professional than others. As an example i have posted images below of my final, and preliminary magazines, for the preliminary i used a generic font which can be found even on Microsoft home software, this is not professional and did not make the magazine look smart, however during my final product i used a font which is exclusive to Photoshop, the font is similar to the font used by FADER and CLASH, obviously i had to research these magazines to find a professional font. I feel like i have learnt to extensively research which text to use and where to place it during the process. As you can see the placing of the text on the front page are very different, with my preliminary featuring a lot of text and my final design being very stripped back, i had to research many magazines to see where they put text and how much they use, prior to this i had done no research so my front cover was very cluttered.

The design of my contents to my final product also outlines a high improvement which i have manages to make. I believe i have adopted a 'less is more' ethos during the process and you can see that in my contents page, it has a pure white background with minimal text, and sharp images, compared to the previous contents page which had a dirty grey background and did not look aesthetic at all.  Adding to this i did a lot of researching where i found out magazines either use a lot of text and barely any images, or vise versa. Also for my magazine  had to research how many pages the average magazine has, and how many pages are in each article, which is mirrored n my final design. i also participated in research where i looked at 10's of magazine contents pages in order to find a design i liked, prior to this i was going free hand, so my final contents page was influenced a lot by FADER magazine.
